Will Smith's Chris Rock Oscar, five reasons why it should never have happened

When a well respected actor and comedian walk down the stage towards another well respected Actor/Comedian, many thought they were about to experience a comic relief or some sort of clap back that would go down in history.

However, that was not the case when famed actor Will Smith took a walk  to the Oscar stage and slapped his colleague Chris Rock.

We have put together  five reasons why the "slapping" should never have happened.

1. It Promotes Violence :   Many fans have taken sides on  issue. Some are in support of Will Smith and commend him for the slap while others think he was wrong.

Over the years, Comedians and show hosts have taken a jab at each other on or off the stage, during award shows e.t.c.

It is quite rare to see a celebrity attack another on stage irrespective of their differences. When Nicki Minaj called out Miley during her 2015 MTV Awards speech, Miley took the high road. It was indeed a surprise that a well respected actor like Will Smith took the route that he did.

There are lots of argument going on about how this will encourage others to attack people who share a joke they do not like and we see why some people are arguing along this line.

A notable figure, Serena and Venus Williams dad who Will Smith portrayed in the move "King Richard" which he got an Oscar for, spoke out against the attack to NBC News through his son Chavoita LeSane;

“We don’t know all the details of what happened, but we don’t condone anyone hitting anyone else unless it’s in self-defense.”

2. Chris Rock was allegedly not aware of Jada's health condition:  According to numerous sources, Chris Rock was not aware that Jada had Alopecia, a condition ,which result in hair loss, when he made the joke. Chris was comparing Jada's look to that of Demi Moore's character in the movie G.I. Jane.

It makes sense to think that he was not aware of the her condition. It will be very low for him to poke fun of her if he was aware of the reason for her being bald. He also did not try to protect himself from Will Smith as he approached meaning he had no idea whatsoever that he would be attacked.

3. It takes away from black excellence: In a time and age where black people around the world are clamouring for more respect, inclusion and recognition. A black man walks all the way down the stage and smack another right in the face in front of the whole world? Neither Chris Rock or Will Smith came out of this a winner.

4. Did Will do it out of his own volition?

Many fans and social media users have argued that when Chris Rock started to joke about Jada, Will was in high spirits and was seen on  camera laughing. There are speculations that he got up to do "what he did" after he caught a glimpse of Jada rolling her eyes and clearly showing signs of not taking the joke too well.

5.  It all went down in front of the Kids.

It was a big night for the Smith Family, their kids, Trey, Jaden and Willow Smith were in attendance. They saw their father walked down the stage to hit another man. We do not know how that feels for them, whether they were proud that he defended their mum as many have claimed or they felt disappointed but watching your dad in that state is not something you wake up and wish for.

The good new however, is that shortly after the unpleasant encounter, Will Smith won the award for 'Best Actor" at the Oscars. That must count for something.

So what do you think? Are you in support or against Will Smith slapping Chris Rock? Let us know in the comment section below.

Yes, Chris made a distasteful joke, but isn't that how comedy goes ? No one is spared. Blondes have been the butt of jokes for so long yet no one has really ever come to their defence. I wasn't even aware she was suffering from alopecia and maybe Chris didn't either, or did - and felt it would make a good joke and went for it anyway , whether everyone found it funny or not.

The question is, where do comedians draw the line ? Is there even a line ? Should there be a line? If I say it was wrong to make a joke off someone's health, that thought should also apply in all areas, as what people find offensive is subjective. Will laughed (at first, unless he didn't hear it properly and just went with the crowd), while Jada didn't.

Additionally, due to their "weird" family dynamics, a lot of people no longer respect them and while that's understandable, I don't think it's society's place to be offended by their open relationship and sexuality etc. It works for them,so we should try and respect that.

Violence should never be applauded, except in cases of 0self-defence if you feel your life is being threatened!

This is my opinion on the matter.

He would not dare do that to someone he thought would fight back. Violence is never a solution
