United Nations to co-operate with Nigerian armed forces in the fight against Boko Haram


The United Nations is determined to fully support and cooperate with the Nigerian Armed forces to combat the activities of the notorious terrorist group Boko Haram. Press statement below;

The United Nations has assured Nigerian Armed Forces of full co-operation and solidarity of the United Nations in the legitimate fight against Boko haram terrorism. This gesture is in appreciation of the Nigerian Armed Forces contributions to (UN) peace keeping missions.

Mohammed Ibn Chambas, the Special Representative of the Secretary General of the United Nations and Special Envoy of the United Nation Secretary General to Nigeria said this during a courtesy call on the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), Major General Gabriel Olonisakin at the Defence Headquarters, Abuja. He congratulated the CDS on his appointment which he described as a meritorious recognition well deserved.


Ibn Chambas commended the professionalism and contribution of Nigerian military to UN’s missions. He described Nigeria as the largest contributor, hence will not be abandoned at this critical period. “You will enjoy full co-operation of UN as you carry on your responsibilities. The UN appreciates Nigerians and in particular the contributions of the Nigerian Armed Forces to its activities and of peace keeping operations”. Ibn Chambas asserted that Nigeria is always on the side of UN.

In his response, the Chief of Defence Staff, Major General Olonisakin expressed appreciation for the visit. He noted with that the importance of the visit cannot be overemphasized and reiterated that the military has been trying to strategise, and would continue to work for the peace of the Sub region. He also promised the UN Envoy that Nigeria military would not waiver in its responsibility and contributions towards UN goals and objectives.
